Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine

Four municipalities — four efficient and sustainable municipal waste management systems. This is the goal we set in the “Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine” project, supported by the European Union’s LIFE Programme.

Together with partners, the Zero Waste Alliance Ukraine supports municipalities and their residents throughout the process of waste management reform in Ukraine.

Materials for Municipality Use

An increasing number of Ukrainian municipalities are embarking on the path of establishing waste management systems in line with the principles of the circular economy and the zero waste concept. In this process, there is a growing need for practical planning tools, especially when developing local waste management plans that must incorporate new approaches and solutions.

The practical tools and materials developed as part of the “Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine” project are designed to support municipalities in this process. They can be used for analyzing waste streams, planning infrastructure, developing separate collection systems, and preparing effective management decisions.

The materials were tested by representatives of four different municipalities in Ukraine and recommended for use by other municipalities, taking into account any local context.

The Assessment Tool is a questionnaire used by project participants to gather information on the current state of municipal waste management systems in municipalities. It consists of nine sections and includes 67 open-ended questions. The tool is designed to facilitate data collection for the development of Local Waste Management Plans throughout Ukraine.

Webinar recording of the Assessment Tool presentation:

An interactive waste life cycle assessment tool has been developed using the Figma graphic editor, which allows users to visualize the path of waste from its source to recovery or disposal. The tool aims to simplify the preparation of Waste Management Plans and help municipalities better understand the current situation and plan possible scenarios for improving the waste management system.

Access the tool via the link.

The infrastructure checklist for waste management enables you to prioritize projects, effectively plan municipality resources, and move toward a modern and sustainable waste management system. Use the checklist to make informed decisions and accelerate your community’s development.

You can download the checklist by following the link (in Ukrainian).

The reform of the waste management system is one of

Ukraine’s tasks under the Association Agreement with

the EU.

Along with legislative changes, it is important to support local communities by providing them with the necessary knowledge and introducing them to the experience of waste management in the EU. This will allow for the development of Zero Waste Strategies that take into account local opportunities and challenges. Thus, post-war urban recovery will be based on the principles of the waste hierarchy and circular economy.

Based on the practical experience of European municipalities, the expertise of research institutions and public organisations, the future developments will be a confident start for our communities on the path to qualitative changes with care for the environment and public health.

We have four years to do this. So we are working and moving forward!
