Waste Management System Analysis

To build an effective and sustainable municipal waste management system, it is essential to first understand how the existing system currently functions. In the first year of implementation of the “Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine” project, a number of key activities were carried out in the participating municipalities, including:

  • A study of the morphological composition of municipal solid waste to identify its main fractions and set priorities for further waste management actions.
  • Development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to support the effective planning and decision-making based on the spatial data.
  • A survey conducted using the Assessment Tool developed by the project’s experts aimed to collect relevant information on the current state of the municipal waste management system.
  • Preparation of the analytical report, during which project experts conducted a SWOT analysis of the municipal waste management system.

These steps will serve as a starting point for planning further actions and developing Zero Waste Strategies, which will be integrated into the Local Waste Management Plans.
