Zero Waste Strategy Development

As part of the Zero Waste Cities in Ukraine project, funded by the EU LIFE programme, four Ukrainian municipalities have developed strategic documents for municipal waste management. The strategies will help municipalities build modern models of municipal waste management based on the principles of zero waste and the circular economy.

The strategies are based on comprehensive research and relevant data obtained during the project:

  • Information on the current state of the waste management systems was collected using the Assessment Tool (a questionnaire for local authorities).
  • Research on the morphological composition of municipal waste.
  • A geographic information system (GIS) for municipal waste management.
  • Evaluation report on the municipal waste management system by the project’s Expert Group.

The documents prepared aim to establish sustainable and effective municipal waste management systems, prioritising prevention of waste generation and increased reuse and recycling, which will divert waste from landfilling. The strategies will serve as a basis for the development of relevant sections of the Local Waste Management Plans for each participating municipality.
